We all want to ride to the best of our ability. Many riders invest considerable effort training and preparing to reach goals. So what's the role of bike fitting? By optimising your riding position based on your individual biomechanics, a bike fit can allow you to ride more efficiently, more comfortably and can help you stay injury free.
You might be relatively new to cycling and want improved comfort, you may be experienced and looking for specific gains or you may be working towards a new challenge.
Think of the bike fit as stepping towards your goals. It's important to appreciate that it is a process and not a one-off 'event'. Like physical and other treatment, your body will need some time to adapt to change. Your patience will be rewarded.
We accept pain as a result of effort in the saddle, it is that type of sport. Pain shouldn't derive from your bike itself: you should be comfortable and able to function efficiently. If your lower back, shoulders, hands, feet, arms or legs hurt independently of mileage it's a sign something is wrong.

Starting with a detailed interview We build a picture of you, your cycling background, the type of riding you do or want to do, as well as your sports background and your goals. Understandably we’ll need to know about any problems you currently have with your cycling, and details of previous injuries for example. Avoiding pain is a major objective of the fit.

Next, physical assessment It is the key to understanding the individual characteristics that affect your riding. Fundamentally we're aiming to establish the cyclist’s individual anatomy, creating the measurements that determine the bike’s size and adjustment as well as the detail of the rider’s foot/pedal interface.
Moving to your bike We will be finding your optimum riding position based on the physical assessment and observation. The fitting concludes with the recording of your position data, a full copy of the entire fit will be provided for you and kept on file. If needed, we will recommend component choices and adjust your bike based on the completed fit.

The Interview We need to know about you, your life and your cycling. Your future aspirations and current cycling limitations. Armed with this information it helps us determine your bike position based on your type of riding and how much time you have to cycle.

Injury/Pain concerns We will be looking for underlying causes from your bike-position, set-up and history.

Physical Evaluation Body observation and measurements including assessment of your flexibility and ranges of motion will help us build a picture of your bio-mechanics. Particular attention is paid to your feet: a correctly adjusted cycling shoe improves pedalling dynamics, performance and comfort.

Position Analysis Your bike will be adjusted based on the physical evaluation data gained. After warming up, we'll record video files using Dartfish Motion Analysis software. We will be able to show you and illustrate where adjustments can be made to the bike set-up, your posture and pedalling technique to improve your cycling experience.
Fitting process You will be on your bike for up to an hour with constant adjustments and coaching on posture and pedalling technique should it be required.

The saddle and handlebar position will be set, cleat position and possibly insoles as well. You cleats will be adjusted for optimum comfort and injury prevention.
The saddle will be selected for comfort and pelvic support based on your feedback and our observation.

Final Analysis At the end of your fitting you will have your position data recorded and filmed with Dartfish: video files will be sent to you for your records and kept on file at Precision Bicycle Works. We will make component and frame recommendations for you and our workshop can adjust your bike based on the fitting data.
